The artist donates £25,000 Mercury Prize to grassroots live spaces

Sam Fender won the prestigious award in October in Newcastle

The star has donated the full amount of his £25,000 award cash to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the UK's grassroots music venues.

He was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his third album his work was declared the top album of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role local spots played in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support 38 small stages across the UK.

The donation helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges arising from water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The concept that money from performances in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

He is not the first artist to donate his honor winnings to charitable organizations.

In Pulp earned the trophy in the year 1996 for their release their work, vocalist Cocker announced that the group would give their winnings to the organization War Child.

During 2002, musician the artist split her bounty among multiple good causes, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

In recent years, they contributed their prize money to the youth organization that supported their act, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

Also the 1994 recipients M People gave their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," stated singer Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected the lives of others."

Recently, the MVT shared it had saved two small stages in south-east England, by bringing them into local control.

The Joiners in that area and the second in the city were acquired under the community ownership program, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
