Pentagon Report Finds Hegseth Placed Troops in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
