Lando Norris just pipped fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the closing stages of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the points lead from Piastri by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Piastri had been the leading McLaren throughout the hour before sprint qualifying set to begin at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in realistic title contention, trailing 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th place as his team opted for a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, though minor, when he lost control at the fourth corner soon after starting. Tsunoda slid over the track edges before rotating through the gravel trap, and was fortunate to escape with just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also spun, at the very end of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed corner approaching the last turn on to the pit straight. Hamilton ended the session in P19, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619secs slower than Piastri's pace. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
