Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
