An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away informed my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
